Massive foundational changes are needed. But those changes are beyond what anyone now in charge — including most educators — can do or would be allowed to do, no matter how sincere they are.
Money alone can't fix it, although that's often what both the government and teachers' unions always believe is needed. More money hasn't worked to fix public education in the past — and it won't work now.
Can any country survive for long with a truly broken education system?
None can.
Even if it can be brought back to life, the people currently involved can’t do it. They and their predecessors have tried to get it working right for decades, actually far longer. Not only is it not better, it’s become worse.
If there is any hope to fix education in America — and there isn’t much — it will be up to you. Working with others, you’ll have to figure it out. Sadly, in spite of the many people chiming in with "answers," answers that will work aren't out there.
